Twin Cities Wedding Photography That Keeps You in the Moment

Your wedding deserves incredible photographs.

But the first priority is you living in the moment.

Laughing with your friends. Hugging your people. Losing track of where you put your drink. Dancing terribly. Crying unexpectedly. Looking around the room at some point and realizing that all of these people showed up because they love you.

And I promise, some version of all of that will happen. I’ve seen it once or twice.

My job is to make sure you get to experience it… while creating photographs that let you come back to it for the rest of your life.

I’m David Mesarch, the photographer behind DM Photographs. I photograph weddings throughout Minneapolis, Saint Paul, the Twin Cities, Minnesota and destinations beyond, blending documentary storytelling with polished editorial portraiture.

Documentary when life is happening. Editorial when the moment deserves to live on the wall.

You shouldn’t have to choose between photographs that feel real and photographs where you look fantastic.

When something genuine is happening, I’m not interested in interrupting it just to manufacture a photograph.

I’ll watch. Anticipate. Photograph.

But there are also moments when direction matters.

Beautiful portraits. Wedding-party photographs. Family photographs. Incredible architecture. Interesting light. The photograph you already know is going to end up enormous on the wall.

That’s when I’ll step in.

I’ll tell you where to stand, what to do with your hands, where the light is better and how to make the whole thing feel considerably less awkward than you expected.

Knowing when to observe and when to direct is a huge part of the job.

Your wedding doesn’t have to follow somebody else’s rules.

Especially if you’re LGBTQ+.

Some weddings follow traditions that have existed for generations. Some borrow the parts that still mean something and cheerfully throw the rest away.

Some have two grooms. Two brides. No bride. No groom. Wedding parties that don’t divide neatly down gender lines. Chosen family standing where tradition dictates biological family. Traditions rewritten, combined, invented or abandoned completely.

I think that’s spectacular.

Your wedding should be as individual as the people getting married.

And because I’m part of the LGBTQ+ community myself, that isn’t something I learned from an inclusivity checklist. I’m gay. I have a husband. I understand that our relationships, families and weddings can sometimes come with language, expectations and dynamics that don’t fit neatly inside the traditional wedding playbook.

You shouldn’t have to educate your photographer about any of that while you’re planning your wedding.

You should be able to tell me what you’re creating and trust that I’ll understand how you want the day to feel, the traditions that matter to you, the ones that don’t, and the story you want your photographs to preserve.

And yes, I photograph straight couples too.

DM Photographs is LGBTQ+ first, not LGBTQ+ only.

If you’re a straight couple who sees yourselves in everything you’ve read so far… welcome.

Maybe you care more about the people in the room than following every wedding tradition exactly as prescribed.

Maybe you want photographs that feel like your actual life instead of somebody else’s Pinterest board.

Maybe a gay photographer talking this much about making people feel seen sounds less like a warning sign and more like exactly the person you want around on your wedding day.

If so, there’s a pretty good chance we’re going to get along.

You’re choosing more than the person holding the camera.

Your photographer becomes part of your wedding long before the wedding day.

There are conversations about timelines, locations, family combinations, light, logistics, priorities and the little things you’re worried somebody might overlook.

Then the day you’ve spent a year planning finally arrives… and the photographer you’ve spent all those hours planning with is there behind the camera, capturing the story as it unfolds.

That relationship matters.

You need someone who can be a planner when something needs planning, a coach when you need direction, a calming presence when the timeline gets weird and nearly invisible when the moment needs room to happen.

Someone who understands the plan well enough to know when it needs to change.

And someone you actually enjoy having around.

That connection is one of the reasons I care so much about getting to know my couples before I photograph their wedding.

The better I understand you, your relationships, your priorities and the way you want the day to feel, the better I can tell its story.

Beautiful photographs are only part of the experience.

Weddings contain approximately six thousand moving pieces, three timelines, unpredictable weather, family dynamics, bad ballroom lighting and at least one person nobody can locate when family photographs are supposed to begin.

Experience matters.

I’m a Certified Professional Photographer, recipient of the 2020 David Award from the Twin Cities Professional Photographers Association, and a former member of the TCPPA Board of Directors.

But credentials aren’t particularly useful when your bustle breaks, somebody moves the ceremony indoors or the sun disappears thirty minutes earlier than everybody expected.

The useful part is knowing how to adapt.

My goal is for you to spend less of your wedding day wondering what the photographer needs from you and more of it actually being present for what’s happening around you.

Twin Cities, Minnesota… and wherever your story takes you.

I photograph weddings throughout Minneapolis, Saint Paul, the Twin Cities and Minnesota, and I’m available for destination weddings as well.

Destination work means more to me than putting “available worldwide” underneath an airplane emoji.

When I photograph somewhere unfamiliar, I do my homework.

I research the area. I look for photographic opportunities. I think about light, architecture, travel time, weather, access and logistics before I arrive.

I’ve photographed destination weddings before, and I’d very happily photograph more of them.

Because wherever you decide to get married, showing up prepared is part of the job.

Wedding photography collections begin at $4,800.

You don’t need to know exactly how many hours of coverage you need before contacting me.

That’s something we can figure out together.

What matters first is whether the way I work feels right for you, whether your date is available and whether my photography fits comfortably within what you’ve planned to invest.

If it does, tell me about the two of you and what you’re creating.

A few things you might be wondering

What is your wedding photography style?

A combination of documentary storytelling and editorial portraiture.

Most of the day, I’m watching for real interactions, expressions and moments rather than manufacturing them. When a photograph benefits from direction, I’ll give you as much as you need.

The result is a wedding gallery that feels like your actual day, while still including intentionally created portraits that look polished and beautiful.

Do you photograph LGBTQ+ weddings?

Very much so.

The LGBTQ+ community is my community, and telling our stories is an important part of what I want DM Photographs to do.

I also understand that LGBTQ+ weddings don’t always follow traditional structures… and that’s one of the things I love about them.

Your traditions, your family, your wedding party and even the language you use should fit the two of you, rather than forcing the two of you to fit the wedding industry.

Do you photograph straight weddings?

Absolutely.

DM Photographs is LGBTQ+ first, not LGBTQ+ exclusive.

If my work, values and approach resonate with you, I’m much more interested in that connection than the genders of the people getting married.

What if we’re terrible in front of a camera?

Then you are in extraordinarily good company.

You are not responsible for knowing how to pose.

When direction will help, I’ll give it to you. When you’re already having a genuine moment together, I’m much more likely to leave you alone and photograph it.

Where do you photograph weddings?

I’m based in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area and photograph weddings throughout the Twin Cities and Minnesota.

I also photograph destination weddings and approach them with the same planning mindset… researching the location, logistics and photographic possibilities before the wedding rather than figuring everything out when I arrive.

How much does wedding photography cost?

Wedding photography collections currently begin at $4,800.

The right collection depends on your timeline, the amount of coverage you need and the photography team that makes sense for your wedding.

You don’t need to figure all of that out before contacting me.

Tell me about your wedding.

You don’t need a finished timeline.

You don’t need every vendor booked.

You definitely don’t need to know what time sunset happens fourteen months from now.

Just tell me who you are, when and where you’re getting married if you know, and what you’re imagining.

We’ll figure out the rest together.
